From Burnout to Balance: Finding Rest Through Christ and Exercise

Burnout. It’s a word that’s become increasingly common in our fast-paced world. We’re constantly striving, pushing ourselves to achieve more, to do more, to be more. But this relentless pursuit of success often comes at a cost - our own well-being.

Hi brothers and sisters, I’m Tannya! Being a student athlete for almost my whole life, I truly experienced the worst burnouts, and the most difficult seasons throughout my sporting and academic path. While learning how to balance life and sports, I found God in the midst of crisis, and I’m more than happy to share how I got through difficult seasons of my life, through God’s grace :)

The importance of rest

Rest is not laziness. It’s essential for our physical and mental health. It’s normal to feel guilty when we take a break, especially when we know we are running behind time. However, when we consistently neglect rest, our bodies and minds suffer, and we eventually forget what it truly means to rest in God in that moment as well.

  • Physical recovery: Exercise, while beneficial, can be physically demanding. Adequate rest allows our muscles to repair and rebuild
  • Mental and Emotional Renewal: Rest provides space for our minds to decompress. It allows us to process emotions, recharge our batteries, and return to our tasks with renewed focus and creativity.

Finding Rest through Christ

While physical rest is vital, true and lasting rest can only be found in Christ.

Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

God’s peace is a constant source of strength and renewal, even in the midst of life's storms.

As we get busy with school or work, we forget to truly wind down and take care of our mental and physical well-being. A great way to de-stress from a busy week at work, would simply be a simple workout session, as we should not underestimate how effective a simple hour at the gym can help us to reset.

Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

This verse offers a powerful reminder that God has good plans for our lives, even when we feel lost or overwhelmed.

During seasons of doubt and low self-esteem, we should remind ourselves once again that God has our back, He’s always behind us, and will always be.
